Garmin inReach Messenger Plus: Photo and Audio Messaging Features Come with a Significant Price Increase

Garmin inReach Messenger Plus: Garmin introduced the inReach Messenger in 2022, a satellite communicator that allows two-way texting and SOS support, keeping you connected even in areas without cell phone coverage.

The company has updated the device, rebranding it as the inReach Messenger Plus. This new version retains its text messaging capabilities but now allows users to send photos and voice messages via satellite as well.

However, there is a price to pay for these upgrades. While the original Messenger is priced at $299.99, the Plus version costs $499.99—and this does not include the satellite subscription required for usage. Subscription plans vary from $11.95 to $49.95 per month, with extra options offered for professionals and larger teams.

Garmin Inreach Messenger Plus features

While many smartphones from Apple and Google now offer basic emergency satellite connectivity, the inReach Messenger Plus prioritizes reliable two-way communication beyond cellular coverage. This device allows users to share location updates, download weather forecasts, and send messages to loved ones, even in remote areas.

Adding photos and audio messages in emergency situations can provide significant advantages. Sharing images of injuries or equipment failures can give search and rescue teams valuable information, enabling a quicker and more targeted response.

For enhanced safety, the inReach Messenger Plus features a dedicated SOS button that connects users directly to Garmin’s 24/7 emergency coordination centre. This service automatically sends location information, simplifying the rescue process.

Another key benefit is its impressive battery life. Garmin claims that the inReach Messenger Plus can last up to 600 hours on a single charge when sending text or location updates every 10 minutes.

The InReach Messenger Plus is designed with specific audiences in mind, such as hikers and frequent travelers. It is not a device that the average user might choose, but for those who need it, the benefits—especially its battery life—are clear.
