Apple New Display: Apple is set to make significant changes to its iPhones by 2025. According to a report, the company plans to use OLED screens across all iPhone models, regardless of price. These screens, known for their vibrant colors and sharp images, will replace the older LCD screens that Apple has used in more affordable models like the iPhone SE and other older generation iPhones. This change will also lead to the cessation of screen production for iPhones by the two Japanese companies, Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp.
OLED, or Organic Light-Emitting Diode technology, is becoming increasingly popular because it offers better picture quality compared to LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display. OLED screens can generate their own light, which means they do not require a backlight like LCDs. This makes the screens thinner, more energy-efficient, and better at displaying vibrant colors, making them excellent for watching videos and playing games on smartphones.

Will there be a new iPhone SE in 2024?
Apple first incorporated OLED screens in its iPhone X in 2017. Since then, the company has utilized OLED in its high-end models while reserving LCD for more affordable options. However, now even the budget-friendly iPhone SE will feature OLED screens just like the more expensive models.
This shift is partially due to Apple’s transition to OLED technology. While Japan Display (JDI) is working on new, more efficient OLED screens, it currently produces smaller screens only for devices like the Apple Watch.
Sharp is also reducing its LCD production. The company recently shut down a factory that manufactured large LCDs for televisions and has cut back production at another facility in Japan.
Apple’s switch to OLED screens for all its iPhones by 2025 marks the end of the LCD era for its phones. This shift is motivated by the growing demand for superior picture quality and slimmer, more energy-efficient displays.. It also heralds a challenging period ahead for traditional Japanese screen manufacturers like JDI and Sharp, which will need to find new ways to adapt as the smartphone industry moves away from LCD technology.
Does any iPhone have OLED?
According to the report, this development will deal a major blow to JDI and Sharp, which were once top suppliers of iPhone screens. Nearly ten years ago, these companies provided 70% of the screens for iPhones. However, as Apple transitioned to OLED technology, their business with Apple declined sharply. Till 2023, JDI and Sharp were only supplying LCDs for the iPhone SE, but this will also end with Apple’s shift to OLED screens.
Unlike other suppliers, JDI and Sharp do not manufacture OLED screens for a broad range of smartphones, so they will no longer be included in Apple’s future plans. Instead, Apple will source its OLED screens from South Korea’s Samsung and LG, as well as China’s BOE.
